Week of June 26, 2022

Life can be really hard.  There are days that it feels like problem after problem comes at you in waves… and they beat you down.  Pretty soon you’re getting discouraged.  Your prayer life starts to erode.  Before you know it, you haven’t cracked your Bible open for a month… or two.  You become spiritually cold, worship doesn’t mean as much as it used to.  Simply staying home sounds more and more appealing.  The thought of entering into God’s presence does not occur to you.

Again, life can be hard.  I get it; I get beat up sometimes too.  But… rather than focusing on the problems, let me suggest a better way.  Let your focus be on Jesus Christ, the One who died for your sins.  He offers a better way, a life of peace and other-worldly joy.  I want that kind of life, but how do we get it?

We get it by setting our eyes on Jesus.  We get it as we walk in His Spirit, intentionally listening for His leading, intentionally obeying what you sense He would have you to do.  This isn’t a life lived unconsciously, it is a life lived intentionally.

Where do you start with this kind of life?  Repentance.  Ask the Lord to forgive you for taking His love for granted.  Decide to put Him first in all that you do.  Commit to the practice of the Spiritual Disciplines.  That includes a commitment to consistent prayer.

This kind of prayer is more than laying out your list of desires, needs, and “ought to pray for” items.  It means taking the time to adore Him, to listen to what He might say.  It means conversing with Him throughout the day, practicing an awareness of His presence.  As I write this, I’m thinking “That sounds like a good idea!”  I believe I’ll be more intentional to do this too!
